About Bamburi

Bamburi is the first proper beach strip you hit heading north from Mombasa, which makes it one of the most accessible parts of the Kenya coast for anyone arriving by SGR. The beach is wide, reef-protected, and consistent, good for swimming most of the day without worrying too much about tides. A mix of mid-range and larger international hotels lines the beach road, with enough restaurants and local spots inland to avoid being stuck in resort-only dining.

Haller Park is the main reason a lot of people end up in Bamburi rather than pushing further north. It's a former limestone quarry turned wildlife sanctuary, now home to giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, a fish farm, and a reptile park. Around 2 km from the beach strip, easy to reach by tuk-tuk. Worth half a day if you're staying for more than a night.

Nguuni Nature Sanctuary sits nearby too, quieter than Haller Park and good for walking trails through rehabilitated coastal forest. Not as well known but worth the visit.

Hotels include Bamburi Beach Hotel, Reef Hotel, Travellers Beach Hotel, and several larger all-inclusive properties along the strip. All reachable directly from Miritini by shuttle. Book your transfer now →

Why pre-book your Bamburi transfer from Miritini?

It's a short trip. Doesn't mean it's worth guessing at the terminus gate.

No matatus from Miritini to Bamburi

Matatus to the north coast don't serve Miritini terminus. You'd need a commuter train into Mombasa CBD first, then connect north. With luggage that's a lot of steps for a 35-minute run.

Know your hotel before you arrive

Bamburi's hotel strip runs several kilometres. An unbriefed driver can end up at the wrong end. Book with your hotel name and your driver knows exactly where to bring you.

Fixed fare, no negotiation

KES 400 locked in at booking. No meter, no surge, no back-and-forth at the terminus after a four-hour train from Nairobi.

Heading somewhere else on the coast?

We cover all destinations from Miritini. If Bamburi isn't quite right or your group is splitting up, here's the rest of the north coast network.
