Nyali is where a lot of Mombasa's international hotel chains ended up, mostly because the beach here is wide and the area's well established compared to some of the newer resort zones further north. It's not a remote getaway. It's close to the city, close to the airport, and close to good restaurants without feeling like you're staying in the middle of town.
The Nyali beach itself is decent for swimming, though like most of this part of the coast it's tidal, so the best swimming windows shift through the day.
