It's a short-hop passenger train on the standard gauge track between Mombasa Railway Station in the city and Mombasa Terminus at Miritini. It stops briefly at Miritini on the way.

The whole journey runs about 35 minutes. That's considerably faster than the same road trip, where afternoon traffic between town and Miritini can add 20 to 40 minutes on a busy day.

4. How to Use the Link Train, Step by Step

If you've just arrived from Nairobi and are heading to Mombasa CBD:

1. Walk off the Madaraka Express and follow signs inside Miritini Terminus to the commuter rail platform.

2. Check the departure board for the next link train to Mombasa Railway Station.

3. Match your arrival time to the timetable. If your Madaraka pulled in at 2:00 PM, the 2:25 PM link train is your connection and you'll be at Mombasa Station by 3:00 PM.

4. Board the link train. It stops briefly at Miritini (4 minutes) before continuing to Mombasa Railway Station.

5. Once at Mombasa Railway Station, you're close to the city centre. Taxis, tuk-tuks, Bolt and boda bodas are all available outside.

If you're departing from Mombasa and need to get to the SGR terminus:

1. Head to Mombasa Railway Station in town.

2. Catching the 8:00 AM Madaraka? Take the 6:25 AM link train, which arrives at the terminus by 7:00 AM, giving you a full hour before departure.

3. Catching the 3:00 PM Madaraka? The 12:35 PM link is your best bet, arriving at 1:10 PM.

4. Catching the 10:00 PM night train? Take the 7:20 PM link, arriving at 7:55 PM.

5. At the terminus, allow at least 45 minutes for check-in and security before your train departs.

5. Does This Replace the Need for a Road Transfer?

This is the question we get asked most since the link train launched, so let's just answer it properly.

If you're heading to Mombasa town itself, yes, the link train is a solid option. It's fast, comfortable, and avoids road traffic. We'd genuinely recommend it for CBD-bound travellers.

But if you're heading to Diani, Watamu, Kilifi, Malindi, Shimba Hills or any hotel on the North Coast, the link train doesn't take you there. It only runs between Miritini and Mombasa Railway Station. You still need a road transfer from the terminus to reach the coast.

6. A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Travel

• The last link train from Miritini leaves at 9:00 PM: If your Madaraka arrives late and you miss this connection, you'll need a road taxi or pre-booked transfer to get into town. For late arrivals, it's worth having a road transfer booked as a backup.

• The link train is a separate ticket from the Madaraka Express: Your intercity SGR ticket doesn't cover the commuter rail. You pay for the link train separately at the station or through KRC.

• It's a different service from the Madaraka Express: A lot of travellers mix these up. The Madaraka Express is the Nairobi-Mombasa intercity train. The commuter rail is a short local service. • Night train arrival at 3:35 AM: The 4:10 AM link train is the connection, arriving at Mombasa Station at 4:45 AM. It works if you need to be in the CBD early. If you're heading to a beach hotel, a road transfer is more practical at that hour than navigating the city before dawn.

• Luggage on the link train: You can bring personal luggage on board. If you're travelling with multiple large bags, surf equipment or oversized items, a road transfer to your hotel is more practical since it goes directly to your door.

7. Common Questions

Q: Is the Mombasa Commuter Rail link train free or paid?

A: It's a paid service operated by KRC. Fares are set by Kenya Railways and should be confirmed at the station or on the KRC website. The fares are separate from your Madaraka Express ticket. Your intercity ticket doesn't include the commuter rail connection.

Q: Where exactly is Mombasa Railway Station (the CBD end)?

A: It's the historic colonial-era station off Haile Selassie Road in the Kilindini area of Mombasa, close to the port. About 3 to 4 kilometres from the Mombasa CBD and easy to reach by tuk-tuk, taxi or boda boda from the city centre. Don't confuse it with the Likoni Ferry terminal. They're different locations.

Q: Can I take luggage on the link train?

A: Yes, personal luggage is fine on the commuter rail. But if you're travelling with multiple large suitcases, surfboards or oversized bags, a road transfer is more practical since it goes directly to your hotel door with full boot space.

Q: What if I miss the last link train of the day?

A: If you miss the last link train from Miritini at 9:00 PM, your options for getting to the CBD are a taxi, Bolt or a pre-booked road transfer. We'd strongly recommend pre-booking a road transfer for late-night arrivals so you're not sorting it out at the terminus after midnight.

Q: Do I need to book the link train in advance?

A: Based on current KRC operations, the link train is mostly walk-up. For peak periods, it's worth checking the KRC website or calling ahead. Your Madaraka Express ticket should definitely be booked well in advance, especially for weekends and holidays.

Q: I'm going to Diani. Should I take the link train to the CBD and then a matatu south?

A: We wouldn't recommend it. Diani via town involves the link train, then getting to Likoni Ferry stage, then a matatu south to Ukunda, then a final ride to your hotel. With luggage that's three or four vehicle changes and a lot of waiting. A direct transfer from Miritini to Diani takes 60 to 75 minutes and handles everything for you, including the bypass route. It's worth it.
