Arriving at Mombasa SGR Terminus with a beach holiday ahead of you is a good feeling. You've done the four-hour train journey from Nairobi, you're at the coast, and all that's left is the last stretch to your hotel.
That last stretch varies a lot depending on where you're going. Diani is a completely different trip to Watamu. Kilifi is a different world to Malindi. And Shimba Hills isn't like any of them. The one thing they have in common is that they all start at Miritini Terminus, and they all need a road transfer to get you there.
This guide is for anyone planning a Kenya coast trip and coming in on the Madaraka Express. We cover what each destination is actually like, how long it takes to get there from the terminus, when to go, who it suits, and how to book your transfer. We run these routes every day. The information here comes from the road, not from a tourism brochure.

2. Diani Beach
Diani Beach - South Coast
Kenya's most famous beach. Powder white sand, warm water, and a resort strip that goes from budget guesthouses to five-star properties.
Transfer from SGR: 60 to 75 minutes from Miritini Terminus
We use the Dongo Kundu Bypass - no ferry crossing, no queue. Straight from the terminus south through Kombani and Ukunda to Diani Beach Road. Door-to-door to your hotel.
Best for: Couples and honeymooners, luxury travellers, kite surfers, snorkellers, families, anyone coming to Kenya's coast for the first time.
Less ideal if: You want total quiet and very few tourists. Diani is popular. It's busier than Watamu or Kilifi.
Highlights:
One of the most consistent beaches in East Africa - white sand, coral reef, clear water year-round
Kite surfing is world-class, particularly from June to September when the south-east trade winds blow
Snorkelling at Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park and Wasini Island - some of the best in Kenya
Wide range of accommodation: luxury resorts, boutique hotels, self-catering villas, budget guesthouses
Colobus monkeys in the forest behind the beach - you'll see them from your balcony if you're lucky
Diani Beach Road has restaurants, beach bars, supermarkets and shops within walking distance of most hotels

The Dongo Kundu Bypass changed the Diani transfer significantly. The old Likoni Ferry route added unpredictable time to every journey, especially during peak periods when the vehicle queue could stretch 30 to 45 minutes. The bypass is faster, more predictable, and completely avoids the crossing. It opened and we switched immediately.
3. Watamu
Watamu - North Coast
Quieter than Diani, more nature-focused, and genuinely beautiful. The kind of place people mean to visit for a week and end up staying for three.
Transfer from SGR: Approximately 2 hours from Miritini Terminus
We head north on the B8 coastal road through Mtwapa, past Kilifi and through Malindi before turning to Watamu. Our pickup point in Watamu is the Total Station at Gede junction. Door-to-door available for groups of six and above. Last-mile tuk-tuk and boda boda partners available for smaller groups.
Best for: Snorkellers and divers, marine nature lovers, people wanting peace, couples, photographers, solo travellers who want something real rather than a resort strip.
Less ideal if: You're on a tight budget and want to minimise transfer costs. The longer route makes shared shuttle less cost-effective. Groups of four or more do much better splitting a private vehicle.
Highlights:
Watamu Marine National Park - coral gardens, tropical fish, turtles, occasional whale sharks between October and February
Turtle Bay - calm, sheltered, ideal for swimming even with children
Gede Ruins nearby - an abandoned Swahili city from the 13th century, genuinely impressive and rarely crowded
Arabuko-Sokoke Forest on the way - one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa, golden-rumped elephant shrews live here
Smaller, more personal accommodation scene compared to Diani - lodges, boutique hotels, self-catering
Very little nightlife, very good sunsets

4. Malindi
Malindi - North Coast
Kenya's most Italian town on the coast. A proper town with history, a fishing harbour, marine park, and a long-stay expat community that keeps the restaurant scene interesting.
Transfer from SGR: Approximately 2.5 hours from Miritini Terminus
The longest north coast route - north from Mombasa through Kilifi, past Watamu and on to Malindi. Our pickup point is next to the Tahmeed Bus stop in Malindi and along the route. Door-to-door for groups of six and above. Last-mile partners available.
Best for: Budget travellers, culture seekers, long-stay visitors, anyone curious about the Italian expat community, history buffs, people who want a proper town rather than a resort.
Less ideal if: You want pristine, uncrowded beach. Malindi's beach is pleasant but the town is busy and the sea can be murky close to shore because of the Sabaki River outflow.
Highlights:
Vasco da Gama Pillar - a Portuguese navigational marker from 1498, one of the oldest European structures in sub-Saharan Africa
Malindi Marine National Park - snorkelling close to town, less dramatic than Watamu but accessible
Gede Ruins are nearby - the same as from Watamu, just 20 minutes south
Malindi town market and the Italian restaurant scene - genuinely good food, notably more variety than smaller beach towns
Falconry of Kenya at Mnarani - worth a visit if you have half a day
Lower accommodation prices than Diani for comparable quality

5. Kilifi
Kilifi - North Coast
The kind of place that doesn't market itself and doesn't need to. Kilifi Creek, dhow cruises, bioluminescent plankton at night, and a crowd that comes back year after year without telling too many people about it.
Transfer from SGR: Approximately 75 minutes from Miritini Terminus
North on the coastal road, across the spectacular Kilifi Creek Bridge, and into town. Pickup at Kilifi Naivas Supermarket. We then take the C107 road through Mavueni, Kaloleni and Mazeras to the SGR Terminus for passengers heading to Nairobi.
Best for: Repeat visitors to Kenya who've done Diani and want something different. Digital nomads. People renting beach villas. Anyone who values an unhurried pace over a resort strip.
Less ideal if: First-time Kenya coast visitors who want a busy, well-serviced beach resort with lots of options. Kilifi is for people who've found their feet on the coast.
Highlights:
Kilifi Creek - turquoise, calm, with mangroves and dhows. Kayaking and sailing are the main activities.
Kilifi Creek Bridge - you cross it on arrival. One of the most beautiful road crossings in East Africa.
Bofa Beach - one of the less-discovered stretches of sand on the north coast, historically popular with Nairobi's well-heeled
Bioluminescent plankton in the creek at night - genuinely spectacular, especially from a kayak
Distant Relatives Ecolodge - a community hub with a restaurant, music nights, and a hostel that attracts an interesting crowd
Vuma Cliffs - dramatic clifftop setting above the creek. Worth the walk.

6. Shimba Hills National Reserve
Shimba Hills National Reserve - South of Miritini
Not a beach destination. A forested highland plateau about 55 km from the terminus, home to sable antelope, elephants, leopard, and the Sheldrick Falls. A completely different kind of coast trip.
Transfer from SGR: Approximately 70 minutes from Miritini Terminus
Southwest from the terminus, into the hills past Kwale town to the reserve gates. This route requires a private transfer or a dedicated safari vehicle. Shared shuttle does not serve this route.
Best for: Wildlife enthusiasts who want to combine coast with a wildlife experience. Day-trippers from Diani. People who want to see sable antelope, which are rare and Shimba Hills is one of the best places in Kenya to find them.
Less ideal if: You're looking for a classic Big Five safari experience. Shimba Hills is a forested reserve, not an open savannah. You won't see lions or rhinos here. Think sable antelope, elephants in the forest, and a waterfall.
Highlights:
Sable antelope - one of very few places in Kenya where you can reliably see them
Elephants - a resident population that moves through the forest
Sheldrick Falls - a waterfall inside the reserve, a short hike from the road
The forest itself - dense, green, and completely different to the beach landscape 70 km away
Can be combined with a Diani beach stay for a two-experience trip
Best visited early morning when elephants are active and the light is good

7. North Coast Hotels: Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu and Mtwapa
Not everyone heading to the coast is going to a distant beach town. A significant number of Madaraka Express passengers are heading to hotels along the North Coast urban corridor, places like Nyali Beach, Bamburi Beach, Shanzu and Mtwapa. These are the shortest transfers from the SGR terminus.
Nyali and Bamburi in particular are well-established resort areas with large beach hotels, golf courses, and easy access to Mombasa town. If you're combining a city visit with a beach stay, this stretch makes a lot of sense.

8. When to Go: The Kenya Coast by Month
Kenya's coast has two main seasons: the long rains (April and May) and the short rains (October and November). The dry months on either side are the sweet spots for travel. Here's an honest month-by-month breakdown.

Rain season and transfers
During the long rains in April and May, we monitor meteorological updates and sometimes recommend earlier-than-planned pickups if flooding is forecast on the routes. The Dongo Kundu Bypass and the C107 through Kaloleni hold up better than urban Mombasa roads in heavy rain. If you're travelling during rainy season, message us the day before and we'll give you a ground-level update on conditions.
9. Budget Planning: What Does a Kenya Coast Trip Actually Cost from the SGR?
People ask this a lot, so here's a realistic breakdown for a typical two-person, four-night trip to the most popular destinations. All figures are in Kenyan Shillings and are 2026 estimates.

10. Combining Destinations: Getting the Most from One Trip
The coast routes fan out from Miritini in two directions. North: Kilifi, Watamu, Malindi. South: Diani. This makes combining a north and south coast destination on one trip a bit awkward because you'd need to transit back through Mombasa between them.
The combinations that work naturally:
Diani plus Shimba Hills: Spend most of your time at Diani, take a day trip or overnight into Shimba Hills with a private vehicle. Your hotel can often arrange this or we can arrange a dedicated Shimba Hills day trip from Diani.
Kilifi plus Watamu: Only 50 km apart on the same coastal road. Split a week between them. Transfer between the two is easy and we can handle it.
Malindi plus Watamu: About 20 km apart. Gede Ruins sits between them and belongs to both. Many visitors base in one and day-trip to the other.
Kilifi plus Malindi plus Watamu: A full north coast loop over a week or more. Stay a few nights in each. All three are on the same road and served by our vehicles.
What doesn't combine easily without significant travel time is a Diani plus Watamu trip. You'd need to go back to Miritini or take an internal flight from Ukunda airstrip to Malindi. Not impossible but plan it deliberately rather than assuming it's a short hop.
11. Common Questions
Q: Can I book a transfer to multiple destinations in one trip?
A: Yes. If you're spending time in more than one place, let us know your full itinerary when you book and we'll plan the connections. A typical multi-stop booking might be Miritini to Kilifi on day one, Kilifi to Watamu on day four, and Watamu back to Miritini on day seven for the return train.
Q: Which destination is best for families with young children?
A: Diani and Nyali are the most family-friendly. Diani has calm, shallow water protected by the reef, a good range of family accommodation, and reliable infrastructure. Nyali is good if you want to be close to Mombasa town as well. Watamu is lovely for older children. Kilifi suits families who are comfortable with a more independent set-up.
Q: Which destination has the best snorkelling and diving from the SGR?
A: Watamu is the strongest choice for serious marine activities. The marine park has excellent coral, and whale sharks come through between October and February. Kisite-Mpunguti near Diani is also very good, especially for dolphin trips. Malindi Marine Park is convenient but less spectacular than either.
Q: I only have two days at the coast. Where should I go?
A: Go to Diani or Kilifi. Both are short enough transfers that you don't lose significant time getting there. Diani gives you the classic beach experience and plenty of activity options. Kilifi is better if you want something quieter and a bit more authentic. Two days in Watamu or Malindi would feel rushed given the longer transfer and the depth of things to do once you're there.
Q: Is it safe to travel to all these destinations?
A: Yes. The Kenya coast is a well-established tourist corridor. The main beach towns have functioning tourism infrastructure, reliable accommodation and generally safe environments for visitors. Normal travel common sense applies: don't leave valuables unattended on the beach, use reputable transport, and be aware of your surroundings in busy market areas.
Q: Can I book a same-day transfer if my plans change on the train?
A: Often yes, but we can't always guarantee availability on the same day, particularly for popular routes during peak season. WhatsApp us as early as possible and we'll tell you what's available. Pre-booking is always the better option.
