First-time Madaraka Express travellers often picture the terminus somewhere in the middle of Mombasa town. It isn't. Miritini is on the western edge of the county, out past Changamwe, near the point where the Mombasa-Nairobi highway and the Dongo Kundu bypass meet. It's not hard to find if you know what you're looking for, but it will surprise you if you're expecting a city-centre station.

1. The Exact Location

Mombasa SGR Terminus sits in the Miritini area, off the A109 Mombasa-Nairobi highway. Two landmarks make it easy to spot on any map or GPS: the Dongo Kundu bypass junction is right there, and the Kenya Railways infrastructure is visible from the road.

If you're using Google Maps or Apple Maps, search for 'Mombasa SGR Terminus' or 'Miritini SGR Station'. Both will get you there. Waze users, same thing. The terminus has a proper parking lot, a dedicated drop-off zone just outside the security checkpoint, and it's a formal structure, not a roadside stop.

2. What You'll See When You Arrive

Whether you're arriving by transfer vehicle or you're a passenger just off the Madaraka Express looking for your ride, it helps to know the physical layout.

If you're arriving at the terminus to board the train:

Your vehicle drops you at the drop-off zone next to the parking lot, just outside the first security checkpoint. You'll see a concrete block barrier and a tent area with police and security officers. That's the start of the check-in process. From there it's security screening, ticket printing, ID check, and the waiting lounge. If you've just stepped off the Madaraka Express and need your transfer:

Walk through the arrivals process inside the terminus building, collect your bags, and head for the exit. Just outside on your right hand side, you'll find the pre-booked transfer meeting area. If you've booked with us, your driver will be at the designated spot holding a sign with your name on it. Don't accept rides from touts who approach you before you reach this area. Walk to the meeting point first.

Door-to-door pickup is available in some areas, either included in the fare or for an additional fee depending on the route. In more remote spots, we work with trusted last-mile partners, verified tuk-tuk and boda boda riders who ferry passengers to and from our stopping point at any hour.

Last-mile partners

For areas where door-to-door by our main vehicle isn't practical, we've assigned specific tuk-tuk and boda boda riders as last-mile partners. These aren't random riders. They're people we've vetted and work with regularly for the safety of our passengers. You can book them through our website as part of your transfer and they'll collect you from your door and bring you to our pickup point, or take you from our drop-off point to your accommodation, at any time of day or night.

Below is a breakdown of every route we cover, the pickup and drop-off points along each one, the road we use, and how last-mile access works.

South Coast: Diani Beach, Ukunda and Kombani Route

One thing worth knowing about the Dongo Kundu bypass: it cut travel time between Diani and the SGR Terminus significantly. The old route through Likoni Ferry involved queuing for the crossing, which during peak times could add 30 to 45 minutes. The bypass is direct, no ferry, no queue. It's a better journey all round.

North Coast: Malindi, Watamu and Kilifi Route

The Gede Total Station in Watamu is the reference point most of our passengers know. If someone tells you to meet at 'Gede junction' or 'Total Gede', that's the same place. For Malindi, the Tahmeed Bus area is central and easy to find.

North Coast Urban: Mtwapa, Shanzu, Utange, Bamburi, Bombolulu, Nyali Route

This route covers a lot of ground and the road names change a few times, which can be confusing if you're new to Mombasa. 6. The Dongo Kundu Bypass and What It Changed

If you travelled to Diani before the Dongo Kundu Bypass opened, you know what the old route involved. You'd take the A109 from Nairobi through Mombasa town, navigate down to Likoni, queue for the ferry, cross, then drive south to Diani. On a busy day, the ferry alone could cost you 30 to 45 minutes. The bypass changed that completely for SGR transfers. The Dongo Kundu Bypass connects the A109 highway, right near Miritini Terminus, directly south to Ngombeni on the Likoni-Ukunda road. No town, no ferry, no queue. You come off the train at Miritini and your transfer heads straight down the bypass, picks up passengers along the way and arrives in Diani in about 60 to 75 minutes. Clean and direct.

For passengers coming from Diani to catch the Madaraka Express, it works the same way in reverse. We collect you along Diani Beach Road, drive up through Ukunda and Kombani, join the bypass at Ngombeni, and pull into the SGR Terminus with time to spare. No ferry stress.

7. Planning Around the Location

Miritini isn't in the centre of things, and it helps to plan with that in mind.

• Book your transfer in advance: Especially if you're coming from Malindi, Watamu or further north. The distances are real. A spontaneous plan to find transport at the terminus after a long train journey is not the best approach. Pre-book and we'll have a vehicle ready.

• Tell us your actual address at booking: Particularly for Diani, Nyali and Kiembeni where the roads branch. The more specific you are, the better we can plan your pickup time and route. 'Along Diani Beach Road near Neptune' is more useful than 'Diani Beach'.

• Factor in pick-up time, not just arrival time: If your train leaves at 8:00 AM, you need to be at the terminus by 7:00 AM at the latest. Work backwards from that to figure out when we need to collect you. A passenger in Malindi for the 8:00 AM train might need a 4:30 AM pickup. It sounds early but the route is long.

Q: Can I get a taxi or Uber directly to Mombasa SGR Terminus?

A: Yes. Both Uber and Bolt operate in the Mombasa area and you can request a ride to Mombasa SGR Terminus or Miritini Station. Coverage at that specific location can be inconsistent especially in the early morning or late evening, and prices can be higher than a pre-booked transfer for longer routes. For anything beyond the Mombasa urban area, a pre-booked shuttle or private transfer is more reliable and often cheaper.

Q: Is there parking at Mombasa SGR Terminus if I want to drive myself?

A: Yes, there's a parking area at the terminus. If you're being dropped off, your vehicle stops at the designated drop-off zone near the security checkpoint entrance.

Q: I'm staying at a villa in Diani off the main beach road. Can you reach me?

A: Probably yes but it depends on the access road. Our vehicles cover Diani Beach Road up to Neptune Hotel and Congo River. Q: Why don't you use the Likoni Ferry anymore for Diani transfers?

A: The Dongo Kundu Bypass made the ferry route unnecessary for transfers between Miritini SGR Terminus and Diani. The bypass connects the highway near the terminus directly to the Likoni-Ukunda road south of the ferry crossing. It's faster, more predictable, and avoids the ferry queue entirely. We switched to the bypass as soon as it opened.

Q: I'm in Watamu. Do I have to get to a pickup point myself?

A: If you're travelling as a group of six or more, we offer door-to-door pickup from your accommodation. If you're travelling as an individual or a smaller group, you'll need to get to the Gede Total Station pickup point. Our last-mile partners, verified tuk-tuk and boda boda riders, can collect you from your accommodation and bring you to the pickup point. Q: How does the Kiembeni pickup work?

A: Kiembeni passengers can be picked up along the Blue Estate road on request. There's an additional door-to-door charge for this. When you book, mention your Kiembeni address and we'll confirm the pickup point and any extra fee.

Q: What's the difference between the Malindi Road and the Old Malindi Road on the north coast route?

A: They run roughly parallel on the approach to Mombasa. We use Malindi Road from Mtwapa south, then connect via Links Road to Nyali Road, and the route through Nyali, Kongowea and across the Nyali Bridge. It threads through the urban north coast rather than bypassing it, which lets us serve passengers in Bamburi, Bombolulu and Nyali along the way.
